Nature Heroes

Nature Heroes is one of the first apps that fully integrates online gaming into real-life, community-driven climate action. In other words, you as the gamer will have the opportunity to both enjoy the gameplay on your mobile device AND join events and activities organised across Barbados, or in your own neighbourhood.

DEVELOPER

The game is being created jointly by UNICEF and UNDP Barbados & the Eastern Caribbean offices with the assistance of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), Barbados Government Ministries (Education, Environment and Innovation) and local stakeholders in Barbados.

PLATFORM

Mobile phones, Google Play and App Store

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

An app designed to educate young Barbadians about climate change and encourage them, as well as the general public, to take real-life action in their communities.

TARGET GROUP

Nature Heroes sees young people as the key agents of change to build a more sustainable Barbados. However, a whole-of-society approach is needed so everyone can have fun playing Nature Heroes!

CLIMATE CHANGE: A defining challenge for Barbados

We only have one planet! If we allow it to be destroyed, where will we live? While we can ‘move house’ if we no longer like our neighbourhood, when it comes to climate change, we cannot change our planet. Earth is the only home we have and we have to take care of it.

The best way for us to take care and protect our home… is to become Nature Heroes!

From the digital world…

In Nature Heroes, players have to take care of 3 environments, a beach, a gully and a town. By taking care of the environment they are also taking care of a turtle (symbol of all animals). Throughout the game, the turtle will grow and the player will earn points for the leaderboard as the environment is taken care of.

to the real-life action

The event and quizzes map is where players will be able to discover where they can earn currency for Nature Heroes. There is three different types of events and quizzes all around Barbados:

  1. Hosted events that are created in collaboration with partners. These events will often require activity from the player before they can earn points.
  2. Quest+ where the player will get points by going to a location and answering questions about the environment at that location and
  3. Quests where the player will earn points simply by visiting a location that is related somehow to climate/environment.
